LEWISTON — Everywhere Lewiston turned, Kennebunk was no more than an arm’s length away throughout the teams’ Class A boys lacrosse game in the sunshine on Saturday afternoon. 

The Blue Devils won their fifth game in a row by holding off the unshakeable Rams with a narrow 9-8 victory. 

Lewiston goalie Brock Rancourt was under siege for most of the raging battle, making nine saves to prevent his team from going under. 

“I really appreciate these guys,” Rancourt said. “They are a hard-working team, and we are really looking to go big this year. (It was) definitely tough in there. Kennebunk is a great team. They have amazing attackmen — especially No. 77 (Alex Robinson). That guy insane. They are a beautiful team.

“I thought we able to keep our composure throughout the entire game. We stayed in it …”

Lewiston coach Ben Fournier said Rancourt certainly made a difference in the Devils’ victory.

“Kennebunk had some good shooters. They had some guys with cannons,” Fournier said. “And Brock, he came up big — a lot of foot saves, stick saves, whatever he needed to do. He was saving balls with every part of his body. He played awesome today.”

The Blue Devils (5-2) shut out the Rams (2-4) in the third quarter and built a 9-5 lead heading into the fourth. But Kennebunk punched in three goals in the latter part of the fourth quarter to move within a goal of Lewiston.

Kennebunk coach Chris Gassman is proud of the the Rams’ never-quit attitude.

“They definitely have a great work ethic,” Gassman said. “We just had a little slump in the middle (of the game) and got down too much. It was too little too late at the end there.

“We came out pretty aggressive and we had a good start. I guess that that was the best part of it.”

Kellen Connor scored for the Rams on an assist from Jake Washburn, and Alex Robinson scored off a Will Kull assist to make it a 9-7 game. Washburn then scored his fourth goal of the game to really shake things up for the Devils, but they held on and ran the clock out for the one-goal win.

“Kennebunk, you know, they are a good team,” Fournier said. “They played hard the whole game and we just came out on top today. We didn’t give up. Like I said, Kennebunk kept battling the entire game, especially in that fourth quarter — you know, getting a little nerve-wracking, and the guys kept running their systems and they didn’t lose their heads.”

The first half was a back-and-forth competition. The Blue Devils got on the board first, with Eli Bigelow scoring on a Kyle Graves assist. But the Rams responded with three straight goals to snatch a 3-1 lead. 

Connor used a Washburn assist to score his first goal to tie the game. Washburn provided back-to-back goals, with Connor providing the assist on one.

A five-goal uprising in the second quarter allowed the Blue Devil to hustle out to a 6-5 lead by halftime. Cody Dionne scored three of the goals, two unassisted and one off an assist from Graves. Colton Daniels and Bigelow each added an unassisted goal in the second.

Lewiston carried its momentum into the third quarter, scoring three goals to grab at what seemed a comfortable 9-5 lead before Kennebunk battled back. 

Midfielder Jack Bement used an assist by Dionne to score his second goal. Daniels punched in an unassisted goal and Aiden St. George added what would become the game-winning goal off a Bigelow assist. 

“We are rolling pretty good right now,” Fournier said. “We are playing some pretty good lacrosse.”
