COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD
NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS: Bates College senior and former Edward Little standout Jillian Richardson claimed a New England title Saturday at the New England Outdoor Track and Field Division III Championships in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Richardson won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17 minutes, 12.64 seconds, which was nearly eight seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Richardson earned regional titles all three seasons of her senior year: cross country in the fall, the indoor 3K in the winter and now the outdoor 5K.
Chrissy Aman was the runner-up in the 1,500 for the Bobcats, and Mt. Abram graduate Alice Cockerham took 12th in the 200. She ran a personal-best 25.87 seconds, which is the sixth-fastest time in program history.
Abbey Otterbein placed third in the heptathlon, setting a new Bates record in the event with 4,277 points.
Southern Maine’s Zoe Barnes, a Gray-New Gloucester graduate, placed second in the shot put and third in the discus. She broke her own school record with a 43-foot, 1/4-inch throw in the shot put.
Former Edward Little standout Olivia Jalbert placed 10th in the high jump.
The Bates men finished third to MIT and UMass Dartmouth.
That included a regional championship in the men’s 4×800-meter relay. Calvin Capelle, Jackson Monz, Ned Farrington and Aidan Rooney ran the relay in 7:50.30.
Farrington also ran to a third-place finish in the 1,500, and Rooney took fifth.
The Bobcats also had top five finishes in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Derek Shen, Kevin O’Connor, Aydan Gedeon-Hope and Colby Stakun-Pickering placed fourth in the 4×100. The 4×400 team of Truman Williams, Robby Griffin, Evan Migdole and Peter Ackely also finished fourth.
Ackley earned points in the 400 meters, placing seventh, and Jacob Goff took eight in the shot put.
On Friday, Bates’ Eli Boesch Dining won the 10,000-meter run. Dining, who was running the 10K for the first time at Bates, finished the race in 30 minutes, 32.02 seconds.
Another Bobcats senior, Liam Byrne, place second in the hammer throw (186 feet, 7 inches) on Friday. On
Saturday, he took fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put.
Junior Alma Mackic scored for the Bates women’s team by placing eighth in the hammer (141-11).
COLLEGE BASEBALL
CMCC 13, NHTI 9: The Mustangs advanced to the Yankee Small College Conference championship game by rallying for 10 runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings against the Lynx in Old Orchard Beach.
Central Maine Community College trailed 8-3 before scoring four runs in the sixth, four in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Jimmy Reed led the Mustangs’ offense with a game-high four hits, while Shane Sullivan drove in three runs.
CMCC pitcher Derek Roman struck out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings, and Garret Harvey fanned five in four innings.
James Jones Jr. drove in four runs and Cole Johnston brought in three for New Hampshire Technical Institute.
SMCC 8, CMCC 4: The Seawolves claimed the YSCC championship by doubling up the Mustangs in Old Orchard Beach.
Jimmy Reed drove in two runs and had three hits for Central Maine. Kaleb Thompson also had three hits. Mustangs pitcher Trevor Phelps fanned six batters in 4 2/3 innings.
Sam Keblinsky led Southern Maine CC with three hits. Liam Jann pitched seven innings and fanned six batters.
UMBC 9, MAINE 8: The Retrievers (24-20, 13-7 America East) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Black Bears (23-17, 13-4 America East) in Orono.
Maine grabbed an 8-6 lead when Jake Rainess hit a three-run homer in the eighth, but the Black Bears couldn’t close it out as they lost a conference series for the first time this season.
Myles Sargent also homered for Maine.
SOFTBALL
TRINITY SWEEPS BATES: Annika Haley scored on a Tiffany Stowers fielder’s choice to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, Abigail Alpers later scored on a sacrifice fly and the Bantams (10-19, 5-10) won Game 2, 5-4, for a sweep of the Bobcats (14-14-1, 6-9) at Hartford, Connecticut.
Katherine Merisotis led Bates going 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
In Game 1, Trinity opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth and went on to a 4-2 win.
BRYANT 3, MAINE 2: The Bulldogs (18-27, 6-12) tied the game in the seventh inning and pushed across the winning run in the ninth against the Black Bears (13-37, 4-15) in Orono.
Grace McGouldrick was 2 for 3 with two steals and a run scored, and Krista Francia had two hits and an RBI for Maine.
MEN’S LACROSSE
MAINE MARITIME 27, HUSSON 11: Lewiston High School graduate Jayden Wilson paced the Mariners with six goals in their rout of the Eagles in a North Atlantic Conference semifinal in Castine.
Wilson, a senior, scored five of Maine Maritime’s first nine goals, as they built a 9-3 lead, which grew to 12-3 by halftime. Wilson added a goal and an assist in the second half.
The Mariners, the top seed in the NAC tournament, host SUNY Delhi for the conference title Sunday afternoon.
