The Mahoosuc Community Band will play a Spring Concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at the Bingham Auditorium at Gould Academy in Bethel. Refreshments will be served following the concert.

Under the direction of Gould music director Jim McLaughlin, the band practices with the Gould students weekly. Concert selections include “Somewhere by Leonard Bernstein,” “The Simpsons” by Danny Elfman, “Pick Up the Pieces” by Hamish Stuart, “Liberty Bell” by John Phillips Sousa, “Italians in Algiers” by G. Rossini, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, “Caravan” by Duke Ellington, “Brown-Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison, “Aguero” by Jose Franco, and “Abbey Road: A Symphonic Portrait” by George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Donations are accepted at the door to defray cost of music. Many of the songs are paid for through the Buy-A-Song program. If there is a song or an arrangement you would like to hear, contact any band member and perhaps the music committee can find a suitable arrangement. The entire full-band score costs about $85.

The band will play for Memorial Day. The band has a summer concert August 28. In addition the band will play a concert Monday, August 14 in Waterford. The community band has been organized for 26 years and continues to provide music for the communities.

The community band rehearses on Monday nights at 6:45 p.m. at the Gould Academy band room. New members are always welcome. Young people are especially encouraged to join for the summer as music doesn’t end when school lets out. If you would like more information contact band president Scott Hynek at hynek@roadrunner.com.
