MEDFORD, Mass. — Ella Maher hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to give seventh-seeded Bates a 1-0 win over second-seeded Amherst in the opening round of the NESCAC softball championship tournament on Friday.
It’s the Bobcats’ first-ever win in the NESCAC tournament.
Kama Boswell walked to start the seventh, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a single by Cassidy Musco before scoring the game-winning run for the Bobcats (16-16-1). The Mammoths finish their season with a 24-13 record.
Madison Hollis went five innings, while Delaney Rankin pitched the final two to pick up the win. Hollis gave up five hits and Rankin only gave up one.
The Bobcats advance to face the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 6 Trinity and No. 3 Williams, at 5 p.m. Saturday.

OAK HILL GRADS GARNER GNAC HONORS: Former Oak Hill lacrosse standouts Tiger Hopkins and Xavier Michaud, who now play at St. Joe’s College in Standish, earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference all-conference honors this week.
Hopkins, of Leeds, was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year and a first-team all-GNAC selection and after a 40-goal and 46-assist campaign. The freshman attacker shattered the Monks’ single-season points record while ranking first in the GNAC in assists, second in points and 11th in goals.
Michaud joins fellow St. Joe’s teammates Ryan Bogdanski and Anthony Samiotes on the GNAC’s third team. Michaud, of Wales, broke St. Joe’s single-season record with 52 goals to go along with nine assists for 61 points. The senior finished his career with 87 goals and 28 assists for 115 total points in 47 games.
