DUBOIS, Pa. — Central Maine Community College’s softball season came to an end Tuesday with a 4-2 loss to Mississippi University for Women in the USCAA Small College World Series.
Riley Phillips hit a homer run and scored two runs for Mississippi. Maiya Joe doubled, singled and drove in a run, and Madison Crosby had a double, an RBI and scored one run.
Mississippi University for Women pitcher Avery Byerley allowed 10 hits but held the Mustangs to two runs while striking out two and not walking any batters.
Mckenna Ridlon led CMCC with two hits, while Paige Ouellette tripled and Abby Ferland and Alyvia Perreault had a double apiece. Ferland’s double in the bottom of the seventh brought home Perreault, cutting the deficit to 4-2, but that is as close as the Mustangs’ comeback bid got.
Pitcher Olivia Scott struck out nine and allowed seven hits and walked a pair for CMCC, which opened the double-elimination tournament with a 15-1 loss to Penn State New Kensington on Monday.
SHIELDS ALL-CONFERENCE: Buckfield graduate Hannah Shields was named to the Little East Conference first team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Shields, a senior center fielder, led the University of Southern Maine with a .320 batting average (40 hits in 125 at-bats), scored a team-best 18 runs and drove in a team-high 24 runs. She hit eight doubles and one home run. Her batting average, hits, doubles and RBIs are all career-highs.
Defensively, Shields had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 38 put outs. She is the only Huskies player chosen for the all-conference first team.
