AUGUSTA — A pair of southern Maine residents have been indicted by a grand jury on kidnapping and drug trafficking charges.

They allegedly kidnapped a woman and ordered her to drive away from a Waterville hotel where they were interrupted while robbing another woman.

Police were on the lookout for a vehicle seen leaving The Elmwood hotel on Kennedy Memorial Drive in Waterville at 4:06 a.m. on April 1, following a report of a man with a gun fighting with people. They stopped an SUV northbound on Interstate 95.

The woman driving the SUV told police the man in the back seat held a gun to her head and still had the gun on him, according to an affidavit filed in court by Waterville police officer Riley Dowe. She later told police that the man, whom she knew as Bobby was later identified as Lanh D. Huynh, 28, of Westbrook, had earlier ordered her to drive them away from the hotel but she refused, saying she was on bail and didn’t have a license to drive. She said that’s when he pulled a gun out and put it to her head, ordering her to drive.

Police removed and handcuffed a woman from the front passenger seat of the vehicle, later identified as Ikran M. Abdi, 22, of South Portland, and did the same with Huynh from the rear of the vehicle.

Dowe’s affidavit states a search of the vehicle located a loaded Glock pistol magazine in the center of the back seat where Huynh was sitting, as well as a handgun on the floor of the front passenger seat.

A woman back at The Elmwood hotel told police she had been in the shower and when she came out Huynh and a woman were trying to take her belongings from the room. She said Huynh ran at her and pushed her back into the room and pointed a gun at her. The woman, who declined to press charges, said the people involved had a lot of drugs on them which police would probably find in the car, with her stolen belongings.

Police said they did indeed find drugs in the vehicle, some in the passenger-side glove box and some in a small bag in the trunk, with a digital scale. The affidavit states police found 6.16 grams of suspected cocaine base, 13.42 grams of suspected cocaine, 10.82 grams of suspected fentanyl, and 150 suspected Oxycodone pills.

Both Abdi and Huynh were charged with one Class A felony count of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, and one count of aggravated unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs. Class A counts are felony crimes punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Huynh was also charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, due to being on bail conditions that included not possessing a firearm, violation of a condition of release, and criminal forfeiture of $771 police said was found on him.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
