Track and field: Good competition among River City Rivals

LEWISTON — The River City Rivals track and field meet brought Lewiston, Edward Little, Bangor and Brewer together Saturday, and the competition brought out the best in many athletes.

The Lewiston boys won on their home track, racking up 84 points. Brewer edged Bangor for second place, 74-73, and Edward Little was fourth with 51 points.

The Bangor girls won the team title in dominant fashion, earning a whopping 117.5 points. Edward Little (61) came in second, Brewer (58.5) took third and Lewiston (55) finished fourth.

“The boys just put the pedal to the metal, and, you know, left it all on the track,” Lewiston coach Craig John said.

John noted that the Blue Devils’ girls team turned in several strong individual showings at the meet.

“A lot of girls just did really, really well today,” John said. “We didn’t come out on top with points, but I think in terms of personal performances, the kids are pretty happy about what they did, and so am I.”

One of the best Lewiston performers was Makenna Drouin, who faced off against Bangor’s Anna Connors in the sprints for a showdown of two of the state’s fastest girls.

Connors won the Class A state titles in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 2022, while Drouin placed third in each event.

Both athletes relished Saturday’s high-caliber competition.

Drouin took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.89 seconds, and Connors was second at 12.10.

Connors then beat out Drouin in the 200, finishing in 24.40 to Drouin’s 24.85.

“That was really impressive for Makenna after running the 300 hurdles, but I’m glad to finally come down here and have her as competition. It was really fun,” Connors said. “It was good to have her right there with me, all the way to the end. It was a really competitive race.”

Drouin also had first-place finishes in the 100 and 300 hurdles. She set new school records — surpassing the records she already set earlier this season — in the 100, 200, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

“I’ve been training a lot, and it’s been paying off,” Drouin, who transferred from Edward Little earlier this year, said.

Finishing second to Drouin in both hurdles was teammate Audrey Bilodeau.

In the girls triple jump, Brewer’s Easnadh Nobel-To’olo reached 35 feet on her final jump. That spurred Edward Little’s Saphryn Fulgham and Layla Facchiano on their final chances. Fulgham went first and jumped 35 feet, 5 inches. That gave Facchiano even more motivation, and she finished the event with a jump of 36-01 to earn the win.

“I think it was that girl and my teammate, who I’m always first and second with for triple jump, she hit 35, too, and it just gave me the motivation,” Facchiano said. “And it’s also my best event so, I don’t know, the adrenaline was just pumping.”

Lewiston senior Jibril Holloman found motivation from a few different sources at Saturday’s meet.

In the boys triple jump, it was teammate Heliclenio Dozolo and a couple of Brewer jumpers, Pablo Garcia and Damien Frey. Garcia (40-4.25) and Frey (40-4) both surpassed the 40-foot, 4-inch mark right before Holloman’s final jump. Holloman went last, and left no doubt with a jump of 42-6.25, a personal best.

“Well, I’m very competitive, so I was going for first,” Holloman said.

Holloman battled teammates Ahmed Abdow and Larson Stone in the high jump. Stone bowed out at 5-6, then Abdow at 5-8. Holloman cleared 5-10 to earn the win, then he beat himself by clearing 6 feet, which was a long time coming for Holloman.

“I’ve been on 5-10 for two years,” Holloman said. “Now it’s on to the next height. Just got to keep working, try to get 6-2 now — school record, so I’ll try to get that.”

The Lewiston boys also had wins in the 1,600, 3,200 and 4×800 relay.

Senior Adam Bilodeau quickly put the crowd behind him in the 3,200, continued adding to his lead and then sprinted to the finish for a personal-record time of 10:51.05, more than 50 seconds ahead of runner-up Jackson Dineen of Bangor.

Blue Devils freshman Enzo Giampaolo won the 1,600 with a time of 4:56.11. He also placed third in the 800 and ran the anchor leg of the 4×800 win.

“It felt pretty smooth the middle two laps, we were kind of jogging and I was sitting behind the guy in front of me, letting him kind of break the wind for me,” Giampaolo said. “I was a little scared when the Brewer guy started going with 200 to go, but then the last 100, I knew he made his move too early, and I just gave it everything I have and just pushed through.”

Edward Little senior Tudum Monday took first (14.99) in the 110 hurdles. He touched a few of the early hurdles, which slowed him down.

“I think I can do better,” Monday said, later adding, “But it’s good to get the win.”

The rest of Monday’s Saturday was hampered by an injury, which prevented him from competing in the high jump and in the 300 hurdles.

He did take second (21-2) in the long jump, finishing behind teammate Dru Hyndman, who jumped 21-04.25.

Gavin Therriault (21-0) gave the Edward Little boys a one-two-three finish in the long jump. Theriault also was the javelin champion with a throw of 155-02, which was an inch longer than Lewiston’s Ryker Paradis (155-01).

The Brewer and Bangor boys each had one double winner. Pablo Garcia won the 300 hurdles (43.21) and the pole vault (12 feet) for the Witches. Kiran Small took first in both sprints for the Rams, finishing the 100 in 10.97 seconds and the 200 in 22.21.

Other boys winners for Brewer were Kyle Horr (400), James Bertolino (800), Colby Largay (discus) and the 4×400 relay.

Bangor also won the 4×100 relay, and Josiah Rodriguez placed first in the shot put.

Along with her triple jump win, Facchiano placed third in the girls 400 and sixth in the long jump. She also ran a leg of the Red Eddies’ winning 4×400 relay.

The Edward Little girls had two other first-place showings, including Breya Whitman in the high jump. The senior jumped 4-10, as she works towards peaking in the postseason, which begins next week with the KVAC Large School meet again at Lewiston High School.

“I feel really accomplished,” Whitman said. “I had three attempts for 5 feet, and they all felt really good, like I’m working toward it and I’m going to get it next week.

Red Eddies sophomore Leilani Mitchell won the girls race walk with a time of 8:49.69.

Brewer’s Easnadh Nobel-To’olo joined Drouin as the only girl to win more than one individual event, taking first in the long jump, winning by nearly a foot with a jump of 17-04, and in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet. Karessa Anderson also won the discus for the Witches.

Along with Connors’ 200 win, Bangor had seven first-place finishes: Katie McCarthy (400), Clara Oldenburg (800), Madison McLean (1,600), Sadie Harrow (3,200), Julia Bassi (shot put), Emma McNeil (javelin) and the 4×100 relay.
