BETHEL — A seven-run second inning was enough for Telstar to upend Madison 7-5 in a Mountain Valley Conference softball contest Friday.
Madison (9-7) plated four runs in the top of the second, then Telstar answered with seven in the bottom half of the frame. The Bulldogs added one more run in the fourth, but Telstar pitcher Maylyn Hastings held them scoreless for the final three innings.
Hastings limited Madison to five hits in a complete-game effort. She finished with three strikeouts and eight walks.
Vivienne Charette drove in three runs for the Rebels (5-8), who tallied eight hits. Payton Berry led the way with two of those hits. She, Morgan Zetts and Taehyah Lego each scored a run and drove in a run.
Hope Nadeau doubled and had two of Madison’s five hits. She also had two RBIs.
LISBON 6, WINTHROP 1: Amelia Harvey’s strong pitching helped the Greyhounds (4-10) upset the Ramblers (7-8) in Lisbon.
Harvey held Winthrop to two hits in seven innings. Ava Kottman came up big at the plate for Lisbon, belting a double and two singles, while Aubrianna Bright added a double. Brooke Norman drove in two runs, and Kottman, Harvey and Maria Levesque each knocked in one.
Julia Letourneau hit a double for one of Winthrop’s two hits. Ramblers pitcher Lauryn Wood allowed five hits.
MONMOUTH 4, OAK HILL 2: Brooklyn Federico pitched a four-hitter and received help from center fielder Grace Levesque as the Mustangs (15-1) edged the Raiders (9-7) in Monmouth.
Levesque made a running catch, then threw out a runner at second for a double play to end the game. Federico struck out five and issued one walk for her 11th pitching win of the season.
Federico, Rileigh Chase and Maddie Herr each hit two singles for Monmouth, which opened the scoring with a three-run third and added a fourth run in the fourth.
Oak Hill scored both its runs in the fourth. Ava Rivet hit a pair of doubles, and Kelsey Young scattered nine hits in six innings.
MOUNTAIN VALLEY 8, MT. ABRAM 7: The Falcons (4-11) plated two runs in the seventh inning to win a back-and-forth game with the Roadrunners (5-10) in Salem Township.
Each team overcame two deficits throughout the game, including Mt. Abram eclipsing Mountain Valley’s 6-4 lead with a three-run bottom of the fifth. That 7-6 lead held up until the Falcons’ decisive two-run top of the seventh.
The Falcons were limited to three hits, two by Brooke Bennett, but took advantage of six Roadrunners errors. Mountain Valley, meanwhile, backed up pitcher Maisy Chase with an errorless defensive effort. Chase went all seven innings to earn the win.
Adrianna Stinchfield pitched the three-hitter for Mt. Abram. She also hit a double. Abi Wilcox led Mt. Abram’s offense with four hits, while Ari Dereszynski had three, including a double. Jany Pepin also doubled for the Roadrunners.
MARANACOOK 5, LEAVITT 1: Alexis and Alissa Michaud paced the Black Bears (13-2) to a win over the Hornets (10-5) in Readfield.
Alexis Michaud pitched all seven innings and held Leavitt to three hits. Alissa Michaud, the catcher, finished with a game-high three hits, including a double. Shylah Woodford also doubled for Maranacook.
Sam Deblois homered in the seventh inning for the Hornets’ only run. She also had a double.
POLAND 6, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 1: Gretchyn Paradis threw a three-hitter and struck out 13 as the Knights (13-2) beat the Patriots (2-14) in Poland.
Olivia Rioux hit a two-run double during Poland’s six-run second inning. Emma Martin also doubled for the Knights.
DIRIGO 6, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 5: The Cougars (7-7) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to finish off a back-and-forth game against the Phoenix (11-4) in Dixfield.
Dirigo went up 2-0 in the first, Spruce Mountain tied the score in the top of the third before the Cougars added two more runs in the bottom half. The Phoenix got back within one in the top of the fourth. Dirigo stretched its lead to 5-3 in the fifth and the Phoenix tied it back up in the top of the sixth.
Kallie Errington and Lana Waite both doubled for Dirigo as part of their two-hit efforts. Grace Robbins also had a pair of hits, and in the circle she scattered nine hits while striking out one batter.
Leah Burgess and Mallory Clark each had two hits for Spruce Mountain. Jaydn Pingree (3 innings) and Rylee Turner (3 1/3) split time in the circle for the Phoenix.
BASEBALL
BREWER 8, OXFORD HILLS 7: The Vikings (11-3) made a valiant rally, but the Witches (13-2) held on to win the battle of two of the state’s top teams in Orono.
Brewer and Oxford Hills are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Class A North Heal point standings.
The Witches scored four runs over the first two innings and added four more in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. The Vikings stormed back with five runs in the sixth and one in the seventh before their comeback bid came to an end.
GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 9, POLAND 1: David Black homered and Ian Libby contributed on the mound and at the plate as the Patriots (3-13) took down the Knights (6-9) in Poland.
Black drove in three runs and was one of four Gray-New Gloucester batters with two hits, along with Libby, Abe Bouchard and Nick Geer. Geer and Libby each had a double. Geer also drove in three runs.
The Patriots tallied 14 hits to the Knights’ five.
Libby pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight and giving up five hits.
Gene Grant and Alex Mains each had two hits for Poland.
LISBON 7, WINTHROP 1: Levi Tibbetts took a shutout into the sixth inning and the Greyhounds (10-4) used a four-run first inning to run past the Ramblers (9-6) in Lisbon.
Tibbetts allowed just two hits in 5 1/3 innings, while striking out six and walking five. Jimmy Fitzsimmons came on in relief and kept the shutout going into the seventh, when Winthrop scored its lone run. Fitzsimmons gave up two hits while striking out three.
Tibbetts and Fitzsimmons had the lone hits for the Greyhounds, who took advantage of 11 walks and six errors committed by the Ramblers. Aiden Parker, Jack Ramich and Cody Osmond each walked twice, and Jacoby Tuplin drove in two runs without recording a hit.
Brayden Stubbert had three of Winthrop’s four hits. Carter Collin had the other hit and drove in the Ramblers’ run.
MT. ABRAM 7, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 4: The Roadrunners (11-3) plated three runs in the bottom of the first and held that advantage at the end of their win over the Falcons (3-10) in Salem Township.
Bryce Wilcox, Tucker Plouffe and Bear Rollins each drove in runs in the opening frame. Wilcox paced the Mt. Abram lineup with two hits, including a double, while Plouffe and Logan Dube both recorded two RBIs. Kaden Pillsbury pitched three shutout innings to start the game allowing just one hit with five strikeouts. At the plate, he added a double.
Mountain Valley scored its four runs across the final four frames, but Mt. Abram added three insurance runs in the final two innings to secure the win. Seneca Jones had a pair of hits for the Falcons, and he and Zach New each notched RBIs.
LEAVITT 6, MARANACOOK 0: Noah Carpenter shut down the Black Bears (4-11), pitching the Hornets (8-7) to a victory in Readfield.
Carpenter struck out 16 batters and allowed only three hits to earn a complete-game shutout.
Colten Taylor had two singles and drove in a two runs to lead Leavitt’s offense.
Caldre Glowa tallied two of Maranacook’s three hits.
BANGOR 5, MT. BLUE 2: The Rams (8-7) rallied past the Cougars (7-8) with a five-run fifth inning to claim a key late-season KVAC victory in Bangor.
Mt. Blue scored one run in the top of the first and another in the top of the third to take an early 2-0 lead. Jayden Meader collected three hits for the Cougars, and Zak Koban recorded the lone RBI while also picking up one of Mt. Blue’s seven hits. Koban took the loss on the mound, allowing all five runs (four earned) and six hits in five innings while striking out six. Hayden Dippner pitched a hitless sixth.
Wyatt Stevens earned the win for Bangor, regrouping from those early runs to finish with a complete game. He struck out four and walked three batters. No. 9 hitter Gavin Glanville-True had two hits and a run for the Rams, and Jack Schuck hit a double and drove in two runs.
GIRLS LACROSSE
GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/POLAND 12, WESTBROOK 3: Andrea Smith scored five goals, including the 100th of her career, as the 26ers (4-9) rolled past the Blue Blazes (2-10) in Gray.
Smith became the first player in program history to reach the century mark.
Emma MacMahon added two goals, Alexandra Bucci tallied a goal and three assists, Ruby Taylor and Lexi Wallingford each had a goal and an assist, and Bri Wiers and Avery Haskins also scored for the 26ers. Hannah Driscoll pitched in with two assists and Mya Page made eight saves.
Lyla Dunphe scored twice for Westbrook, Brooklyn Thayer got the other goal, Maeve Tardif provided and assist, and Karla Melgar stopped three shots.
