NAPLES — Paced by Nolan Garey’s record-breaking run in the 110-meter hurdles, the Poland boys placed third in Division 2 at the Western Maine Conference track and championships on Saturday at Lake Region High School.
Garey set a meet record in the event in the prelims, with a time of 14.65 seconds. He bested that in the final, crossing the line in 14.51 seconds. He also won the 300 hurdles, winning in a time of 40.46 seconds, and was on the Knights’ victorious 4×100-meter relay team. He teamed up with Justice Lemont, Cadyn Langlois and Giovanni Warren for the win in a combined time of 45.80 seconds.
The Knights also got individual wins from Lemont (103 feet, 2 inches in the discus) and Hunter Brackett (5 feet, 8 inches in the high jump, in which teammate Anthony Warren finished second at 5-04). Timothy Gray was runner-up in the pole vault, Langlois placed second in long jump, Alerick Sands took second in the race walk, and Giovanni Warren finished third in the 200-meter run.
The Poland boys finished with 75 points. North Yarmouth Academy won Division 2 with 179.5 points and Sacopee Valley was the runner-up with 116 points. St. Dom’s was seventh with 34 points.
The Saints were led by Sam Laverdiere’s titles in the 800 (2:04.60) and 3,200 (10:15.06).
The Gray-New Gloucester boys finished in fifth with 38 points. Greely was the champion, with 179.5 points, followed by York (147), Freeport (82) and Yarmouth (77).
Carter Libby won the 800-meter run (1:58.53) and Michael Maines captured the 3,200 (10:23.07) for the Patriots. Trevor Amos was the runner-up in the discus, with a best toss of 133-11.
The Poland girls also finished third in Division 2, behind champion Sacopee Valley (150.5) and second-place Wells (157). The Knights earned 100 points as a team.
Arianna Gammon and Ava Anderson were individual event winners for Poland. Gammon won the 100-meter dash in 13.62 seconds and Anderson was the champion in the discus, with a top throw of 67 feet, 5 inches. Anderson also placed second in the javelin and shot put.
The Knights’ 4×100 relay team was also victorious, with Emma Jones, Ava Ouellette, Alexis Corriveau and Gammon crossing the line in 55.53 seconds.
St. Dom’s placed sixth in Division 2 as a team, with 33 points. The Saints were led by a second-place finish in the 4×100 relay (Alexyss Baird, Brookelyn Whited, Lauren Hanlon, Nina Brown) and Hanlon’s third-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Gray-New Gloucester girls placed fifth in Division 1, with 82 points, behind York (141), Greely (111) and Freeport (107).
Ella Brown was the champion in the long jump (15 feet, 7.5 inches) and Alexis Hutchings won the discus ahead of teammate Lorenza Piper. Hutchings topped the field at 95-08, and Piper’s best throw was 92-04. Emma Hutchings and Piper finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put, with Alexis Hutchings taking fourth.
