WATERVILLE — Edward Little is back in the Class A North final as a low seed after defeating Messalonskee 6-3 on Saturday at Colby College.
The eighth-seeded Red Eddies will face seventh-seeded Bangor in the regional final Tuesday at Morton Field in Augusta. Edward Little, which has won eight of its past 10 games, reached the A North title game as a seventh seed last year.
Brady Vincent pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings for Edward Little on Saturday before reaching his pitch limit. Owen Scott took over on the mound with the bases loaded. He walked in a runner and allowed a two-run single before inducing a ground out to end the threat and the game.
Edward Little scored three runs in the third, one in the sixth and two in the top of the seventh to take a 6-0 lead into the final half-inning. Eli St. Laurent had three hits and drove in two runs for the Red Eddies.
Ryan Card and Jack Hammond each had two hits for the fourth-seeded Eagles (12-6).
MONMOUTH 3, OAK HILL 1: The second-seeded Mustangs (17-1) won a low-scoring, low-hit and low-strikeout battle against the third-seeded Raiders (14-4) in a Class C South semifinal at Colby College in Waterville.
Each team had five hits — all singles. Monmouth pitchers Sammy Calder and Isaac Oliveira combined for five strikeouts, and Oak Hill starter Kyle Delano and reliever Trent Drouin each fanned one batter. Each team committed one error.
The Raiders scored first, going up 1-0 when Landon Bangs drove in Landen Denis in the second inning. The Mustangs took the lead with two runs in the third, and the plated one more in the fifth.
Kyle Palleschi had a game-high two hits and scored one of Monmouth’s runs. Matt Marquis and Brandon Smith also scored. Marquis, Oliveira and Manny Calder each drove in a run.
Sammy Calder pitched the first five innings, allowing four hits and one walk and striking out three to earn the win. Oliveira secured a save by striking out two and limiting Oak Hill to one hit in two innings.
Denis, Bangs, Grayson Letourneau, Cooper Spencer and Zak Beans singled for the Raiders. Delano gave up five hits and walked three in 4 1/3 innings. Drouin didn’t allow a hit or walk a batter in 1 2/3 innings.
Monmouth advances to face No. 1 Sacopee Valley (18-0) in the C South final on Tuesday at the University of Southern Maine.
SOFTBALL
YORK 8, POLAND 4: Maddy Raymond and McKayla Kortes finished with three hits apiece as the top-seeded Wildcats (17-1) returned to the Class B South final with a victory over the fourth-seeded Knights (14-4) in York.
“The girls came flying off the field. They knew exactly what was at stake today,” said Wildcats coach Kevin Giannino, whose team lost to Gardiner in last year’s regional final. “The first thing we said was, ‘We’re going back.’ … I know that was important to them.”
York broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Raymond and Kortes each drove in runs during the inning, as did Ella Moon with a double.
Emily Estes and Nya Avery chipped in with two hits apiece.
Khloe O’Leary, Maddie McGlauflin and Alyssa Hart all had two hits for Poland.
BOYS LACROSSE
WAYNFLETE 13, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/POLAND 0: Seth Cloutier scored six goals to lead the top-seeded Flyers (13-2) past the ninth-seeded 26ers (8-8) in a Class C quarterfinal at Portland.
Roan Hopkins added two goals and three assists, Jacob Woodman also scored twice, and Haven Kreiss, Charlie Hornor and Jasper Curtis were the other goal scorers.
