The Honorable Louis J. Brann, Mayor of Lewiston, is tired of throwing up the first ball at various league opening ceremonies. He has estimated that some 794 times during the past ten years he has performed this memorable feat. This year he pleads leniency and craves the opportunity to stand at the plate and take a swing at some other high official’s offering. And in this request, J. D. Anderson, Manager of the Taxes, is seeking a fit moundsman to satiate the Lewiston executive’s appetite. None other than the estimable C. S. Cummings, Auburn’s versatile mayor, is sought to serve up a couple for the gubernatorial candidate.

50 Years Ago: 1973

It took 12 years of not-too-patient wheel spinning for pretty Shirley “Cha-Cha” Muldowney to be taken seriously in the men’s world of drag racing. Now that she has proven a point, she storms from drag strip to drag strip in her 1973 Satellite Sebring Funny Car carrying these impressive credentials: Quickest Funny Car Woman Driver in the sports history, Top Female Purse Winner in drag racing, First Girl Dragster Pilot and holder of the first NHRA Dragster license ever issued to a woman. She has defeated nearly every big name funny car driver. She’s her own manager, contracting with engine and chassis builders, painters, sponsors, and booking her own appearances.

25 Years Ago: 1998

Central Maine Power Co. and its affiliate have agreed to sell land and assets related to seven hydro-electric projects and other facilities to FPL Energy Maine Inc. for $1.5 million. The sale, which requires state and federal approval, comes about five months after CMP agreed to sell its hydro-electric, oil-fired and biomass power plants to FPL Group for $846 million.
