This is in reference to the letter from Pete Geiger on June 27 titled, “All can chip in to keep Lewiston clean.”
I have voluntarily participated in the City of Lewiston’s spring and fall cleanup for the past couple of years. I definitely agree with the writer that it doesn’t take long for the same areas collected to begin to fill up with more litter.
From the end of March until December, I have averaged about five hours a week collecting trash from sidewalks and curbs. Disposable face masks, syringes, and Styrofoam meal boxes with uneaten food in them are just being dropped on the ground or thrown into bushes.
Along some of the downtown streets that have a lot of parked cars, there is sometimes litter strewn along the curbs. It makes you wonder if occupants of some of the vehicles are just getting rid of their unwanted trash by disposing of at the curbs, thinking city crews will pick it up during their street cleaning operations.
It could be almost a full-time job trying keep up with litter collection along Lewiston’s downtown streets. It only takes a home or business owner a little of their time each week to keep areas in front of their home or business free of litter.
Harbor Freight sells a litter pickup collection tool anywhere from $3 to $10, a 100-pack of disposable vinyl gloves are $7, and 5-gallon plastic buckets go for around $5.
An inexpensive investment for anyone wishing to do their part helping to keep their city clean.
