A co-driver in the New England Forest Rally was killed Friday in a crash on the South Arm Road, near Lower Richardson Lake in Township C, according to officials.
Erin Kelly, 47, of Marshall, Virginia, was sitting in the passenger side of a 1998 Subaru Impreza OBS, driven by Thomas Pullen, 41, of Northwood, New Hampshire, when the vehicle crashed. Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene in Oxford County.
Officials did not say if Pullen was injured in the crash, which was still under investigation Saturday.
The American Rally Association, or ARA, released a statement Saturday morning in which it expressed condolences to Kelly’s family and said the remaining races would be canceled out of respect for Kelly’s and Pullen’s families and friends.
The cancellation followed a meeting involving race crews, rally organizers and series officials at Sunday River, where more than half the crews had signaled their intention to withdraw from the event.
Pullen and Kelly had partnered in races for several years, most recently winning the 2018 ARA East Regional NA4WD Championship.
“Our focus right now is on Erin, TJ and their families,” said ARA Series Director Preston Osborn. “Erin was an accomplished co-driver and a well-loved member of our rally community. We send our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and our competitors and fans.”
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police, Med-Care Ambulance and Andover Fire Department responded to the crash.
