DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m writing about the families and friends with a loved one who is incarcerated in Maine or elsewhere in a jails and state or federal prisons. These families and friends who are suffering, ashamed, insecure, isolated, living in silence and shunned are who Rose’s Room is trying to reach.

It’s difficult to admit or to share with anyone that your loved one or friend is locked up somewhere.

Maine has 16 correctional facilities with a census of 1,766, as of July 18, 2023.

At Rose’s Room there are people who won’t judge, who who care, listen and support because they have been down the same path. They meet the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church at 78 Pleasant St. in Auburn. There are three other chapters ready to open in Alfred, Westbrook and Winslow.

The hardest part of attending an in-person meeting is opening the door and walking through the threshold. Once you are in, you’re welcomed with open arms and can just sit and listen or share.

We also have Zoom meetings the first Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m., if that makes it easier.
