It seems that the season of lies and smears, otherwise known as an election year, is in full swing as shown by the aggressive sign strategy the Jeff Harmon for Mayor campaign is waging.
I see one glaring commonality this year, if you have a Protect Lake Auburn sign, you have a Harmon for Mayor sign. It was obviously planned that way, old school politics comes to Auburn … build a false narrative, create a boogeyman (this case Mayor Jason Levesque) and then run someone to save us all from the fake crisis.
I live in the watershed and talked with many of the staff and commissioners from the Auburn Water District and the Lake Auburn watershed protection committee. They have all told me that the new changes in septic ordinance and low impact design standards the council implemented were recommended over 20 years ago. And weren’t acted upon because those elected leaders were more concerned with people liking them than doing what was right, so they did nothing and left the unpopular work to future elected officials.
The so-called fight over protecting Lake Auburn isn’t about protecting the lake, it is just one long campaign by those who do not want Auburn to prosper, or be fairer, or have more opportunities for people.
People shouldn’t be duped by signs; they should recognize that this is the old wealthy elites of this city trying one last time to regain power and do what they did for the last 40 years … nothing.
