DEAR SUN SPOTS: School has begun at the Lewiston-Auburn schools, and I have not seen a school calendar in your newspaper. Hoping to see one soon. We used to have one every year, but lately it is not available. I realize you cannot notify us of storm days, but all other days can be verified by the schools. —No name, no town

ANSWER: According to Sun Journal editors, the calendar listings used to be sponsored by an advertiser. The paper is not running them now because the advertiser is no longer sponsoring them.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Friends of the Rumford Public Library is planning a book sale for Saturday, Sept. 23, and is accepting donations of gently used books beginning Sept. 12. Please do not donate encyclopedias, dictionaries, textbooks, Readers Digest condensed books, magazines or VHS or cassette tapes. They are not in demand by book sale patrons.

Donations can be brought to the Public Room during normal library hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. The library is closed Saturday and Sunday.

Over the past several years, the Friends of the Rumford Public Library has used the money raised through book sales to support library events and special needs. The most recent project was acquisition of the cherry bookcase designed and built by local craftsman Gary Gallant.

The bookcase, designed to complement the shelving in the reading room, will provide secure storage and display of local historical materials and items of area interest, such as the recent display of Lithuanian artifacts.

The price of books will be by donation and the sale is open to all book lovers. New members to the Friends of the Library are always welcome. Call the library at 207-346-3661 for more information. — Ginny Todd, member, Friends of the Rumford Public Library.
