LEWISTON — Multiple shots were fired Tuesday afternoon on Bradley Street and minutes later, police took several people in for questioning after a vehicle was stopped on Ash Street.
At 2 p.m., several witnesses reported shots were fired and early indications were that nobody was struck by gunfire. Police were still processing the scene later in the day.
“I heard what I thought were two gunshots from somewhere near Ash and Jefferson,” one witness said. “Then what sounded like a car with a loud exhaust going down Ash Street toward downtown.”
Minutes after the shooting was reported, police spotted a vehicle near the intersection of Ash and Park streets that fit the description of accounts given by witnesses.
Police made a stop at the scene, removing several people from the car one by one. Investigators said they recovered a handgun from the vehicle, as well.
It was not immediately clear how many people were inside the car that was stopped. Witnesses said it was “packed full” of what appeared to be young people, some of them possibly teenagers.
Later Tuesday, police were still interviewing those people as well as other witnesses as the investigation got underway. No charges were immediately filed.
The shooting was the latest in a series that have left local citizens rattled over the summer. In July, two men were killed in a shootout on Knox Street. A week after that, two people were injured in a shooting near Dufresne Plaza on Lisbon Street.
In mid-August, police and city leaders invited citizens to two safety forums where the matter of downtown violence was discussed. Mayor Carl Sheline has also pledged to start an advisory committee to discuss the problems.
