100 Years Ago: 1923
Three hundred Rotarians, representing 28 New England Rotary clubs, had reached the Poland Spring house for their annual conclave of the 31st district, at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon. One hundred and fifty others are expected before night, and a few more on Tuesday morning. This will make quota – approximately 500 – complete for the first half of the week. On Wednesday night these 28 clubs will go, and 28 others including that of Lewiston and Auburn will take their places. Thus between one thousand and eleven hundred Rotarians, will this week be entertained in two distinct sections, and with two distinct programs.
The 300 already here make a wonderful showing; the hotel and its spacious grounds literally swarm with them. Everywhere one sees the official Rotary emblem – a blue circle, or Rotary wheel, bearing the inscription, “Fall conclave, Sept. 1923. 31st district, international rotary”. On the inside of the circle is a striking picture of the Poland Spring house.
50 Years Ago: 1973

The third annual Asthma Health Fair is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Lepage Conference Center, 99 Campus Ave.
“We’re planning a day of fun for adults and kids,” said Maryann Cormier, an asthma instructor and one of the coordinators of the asthma fair, “But we’re also going to present some important information about asthma and how to manage the condition.”
The fair is designed for asthmatics and their families, teachers, coaches, school nurses or for anyone working with people who have asthma. There will be special activities for kids and displays with information and equipment that can help asthmatics. The fair will also feature free food, fun and prize drawings throughout the day.
Guest speakers include Dr. George Varney, a pulmonologist and allergy specialist who will discuss ” Cost vs. Quality in Asthma Therapy” at 11 a.m. Dr. Andrew Carey, an allergy and immunology specialist, will feature workshops for kids all day. Dr. Richard Kahn, a pulmonologist, will speak on “Managing an Asthma Attack at Home” at 1:15 p.m. Registered nurse Linda Nadeau from HealthSteps, will present “Exercise is for Everyone” at 9 a.m.; Mary Doyle, a registered dietitian at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, will present “Good Food- Good Health” at 10:30a.m. Tricia Hayes, from Child and Adolescent Services at St. Mary’s, will present “Self-Esteem” at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Linda Glass from Pediatric Associates, will present “Asthma Care Plans” at 2 p.m.
The fair is offered free of charge to the public. It is sponsored by various pharmaceutical companies and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s Open Airways Asthma Program.
