LEWISTON — Donna Gallant announces her bid to represent Ward 7 on the Lewiston School Committee.
The decadelong Lewiston resident said she believes it is time for urgent change in city schools.
Gallant graduated from the University of New England with a master’s degree in social work, which has given her a wide variety of skills and experiences that will directly contribute to work on the school committee, she said. She is also a U.S. Army veteran.
She recently retired from a career in social work. She is chairwoman of the Lewiston Senior Advisory Council and serves as a volunteer for Pathway Vineyard Church Lewiston programs.
Gallant supports requiring background checks for anyone volunteering to teach students unsupervised in city schools, she said. She is concerned about what she views as an increase in violence within city schools. There needs to be greater parental involvement, along with law enforcement measures to combat the trend, she said.
She believes there needs to be a complete evaluation of administrative and teacher requirements to determine how to best use taxpayer money, she said. Councilors need to review and revise the budget to save funds while meeting the needs of students, she said.
