100 Years Ago: 1923
Efforts are to being made to improve the acoustics of the courtroom in the county building in Auburn. Either wires or a sounding board will probably be used for this purpose.
Since the remodeling of the courtroom a few months ago, when the new wing was added, the attorneys and many of the visiting Justices have found it extremely difficult to hear all of the testimony., and it has been reported the matter was brought to the attention of the county commissioners.
The building commission has communicated with specialists in acoustics to see what can be done toward bettering the condition, which is aggravated by a stream of noisy traffic up and down Court Street incline.
50 Years Ago: 1973
The U.S. Postal Service took formal steps Tuesday to raise the price of mailing a first class letter from eight cents to a dime.
The Postal Service filed the rate proposal with the Postal Rate Commission, making official the action announced Monday by Postmaster General Elmer Klassen. The commission will conduct public hearings on the proposal. and deliver its recommendation to the board of governors of the Postal Service which has final decision-making authority.
The Postal Service also proposed to raise the cost of sending postcards from six cents to eight cents and air mail letters from 11 cents to 13 cents.
In addition, the proposal would require rate increases ranging from 6 percent to 40 per cent for most other classes of mail. In many of those cases, the price hikes would amend the existing schedule for phasing in higher prices.
At a news conference, Klassen said the rate increases are necessary to offset the higher wages required by the new Postal Service contract with the postal workers union. If the Postal Service cannot raise the funds through higher mail rates, the money must come from congressional appropriations, he said.
25 Years Ago: 1998
Apple stories and rhymes will be presented by Judy D’Amour at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Auburn Public Library. Chicken Little will visit an apple orchard and the children will make apple prints to bring home.
