BRIDGTON — The Bridgton-Lake Region Rotary Club hosted its 14th Annual Golf Classic at Bridgton Highlands Country Club on Saturday, September 16. “Excitement leading into the final days and hours before the event was caused by Hurrican Lee.  Will it happen? What are the alternatives? We continued to say, that the tournament is scheduled Rain or Shine,” remarked Golf Committee Chair Lisa Ryan.

“In the end, everyone showed, except one golfer from Cape Elizabeth. In fact, that morning about 10 new golfers showed up and were eager to participate. Thank goodness Hurricane Lee didn’t bring more than some gusty winds and sprinkles from time to time. We all had a grand time.”

In addition to the morning of golf with a golf cart, all golfers were treated to morning coffee, donuts, and breakfast sandwiches. Following the round of golf, a lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers was served. Those who bought “mulligans” (just about everyone), had 2 of those, a chance to win wine or bourbon on the putting green, and a free beverage in the clubhouse. A huge shout-out to all our golfers. And to Aroma Joe’s for coffee and donuts and MANE Catering for breakfast sandwiches. Bridgton Highlands always provides a tasty lunch.

 

Rotarians were joined by Interactors Susie Butler (12th grade), brother Jack (9th grade), and Sera Travis from Lake Region High School. These junior Rotarians held a 50/50 raffle, the proceeds of which will help fund a service mission to Colombia in the Spring of 2024 to work with children in partnership with young Rotarians in that country.

Several hundred dollars were raised. The winner of the 50/50, Joanne Cohn, returned her share to the young Rotarians to contribute to their fundraising mission, bringing their total takeaway to over $500. The Interactors so appreciated their partnership with club members, and Rotarians love working with the high school students.

Rotary’s motto is ‘Service above self’. The Golf Tournament is the club’s biggest fundraiser each year and helps club members prepare and host Community Kettles, donate winter outerwear to youngsters through elementary schools, provide dictionaries to 3rd graders in Naples and Bridgton, offer scholarships at Lake Region High School, and address Veteran’s, Substance Abuse and Child Safety issues and much more.

The Bridgton-Lake Region Rotary Club meets at 7:30 a.m. on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Thursdays of each month at Stella’s on the Square, 6 North High Street, Bridgton. Whenever a month has a 5th Thursday, a fellowship event is created.
