We only had a dozen guesses for last week’s Mystery Photo. Most of those incorrectly guessed it was one of buildings on the St. Mary’s Hospital campus. The remainder knew it is the Queen Anne-style building currently housing Central Maine Health Care offices at the corner of Main and High streets in Lewiston. One of the correct entries, and this week’s winner, is our most frequent player, David Gudas of Lewiston. Most weeks his answers — win or lose — include historical or anecdotal information about the Mystery Photo. He shared this text from a Lewiston Historical Commission publication: “At 364 Main Street stands one of Lewiston’s outstanding examples of Queen Anne style architecture. Originally the home of L.L. Blake, a Lisbon Street furniture dealer, it has been the convent of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Joseph’s Parish since 1913. It was constructed in 1880, at the peak of the local vogue for picturesque and elaborate effect. The building sits, like Queen Anne herself, in complacent brick splendor, adorned with a circular corner turret, a half-timbered gable, and literally dozens of granite-edged windows. Slightly back from the house is an equally substantial coach-house.” Gudas was picked in a random drawing from all the correct entries and will receive a $25 Hannaford Supermarket gift card.
