Hewey resigned Sept. 25. He did not respond to messages left Monday.

In the interim, Garland said he appointed Deputy Chief Shawn Cordwell as acting fire and rescue chief. Cordwell, a licensed paramedic, has been with the department since 1993.

Hewey, a longtime Oxford firefighter was promoted to chief in June 2019 following the death of Chief Gary Sacco.

At that time, Hewey had been assistant chief since June 2017. Before that he  had been interim chief since December 2016 when Chief Wayne Jones abruptly resigned.

Jones quit after it was discovered that one lieutenant and two firefighters had broken into his office at the Public Safety Building on Route 26 and removed his belongings. Lt. Marc Blaquiere and firefighter Kyle Hewey were fired, and firefighter Michael Doze was disciplined for the break-in.

An advertisement for fire and rescue chief has been posted on the town website and the Maine Municipal Association’s website.
