There were no cattle pulling tests at the grange fair here today. An official of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, representing himself to be acting under orders from Gov. Baxter, prohibited it, fair officials said. Cattle pulling tests have been an institution at Maine fairs for years and some have been held this season, the management declared.
50 Years Ago: 1973
Sheep Leash Law Is Next?
A male sheep was seen chasing a dog in Auburn this morning.
It was about 10 a.m. that police were notified that a dog and a ram were causing a traffic hazard of sorts on Harris Street, near Edward Little High School.
Dog Officer Louis Pinette and Patrolmen Robert Gosselin and Calvin Hunter were dispatched and managed to catch the sheep. It was tied and brought back to its owner.
The canine managed to get away safely. both from the sheep, and the dog officer.
25 Years Ago: 1998
Preparations for Sunday’s opening day of the 148th Fryeburg Fair were well underway Friday, Smokey’s Greater Shows midway was set up for the 15th year: Concession stands were getting ready to open, and free fair meals were being served at Fandangles Restaurant. The Agricultural Exhibition Center, Forestry Resource Center and Craft Center were bustling as exhibitors arranged their displays. A few steers and other animals were in stalls, most arriving Saturday.
What’s new this year at the Maine Blue Ribbon Classic? Fair Secretary June Hammond replied, “The biggest thing is the addition to the 4-H livestock building, which doubled its size.” The total 4-H complex of 17,000 square feet makes it one of the largest buildings on the 185-acre fairgrounds and one of the largest 4-H exhibition centers anywhere.. There is also a new stage in the children’s McDonald’s Farm Park called the Hayseed Theater. In addition to the main stage in front of the grandstand, which features nightly Shows by well known entertainers, the four smaller stages provide special daily shows with variety to guarantee something for everyone.
