Buckfield/Dirigo earned its first program win by trouncing Traip 28-7 on Oct. 4, 2003. Scott Wetherell ran for 121 yards and a score and returned an interception for a TD for Buckfield/Dirigo, which was in its first year as a co-operative football program (it lasted two years before Dirigo broke off and began playing on its own). Craig Langervin, Jamie Henderson and Jacob McCalister also scored for Buckfield/Dirigo. That same day, Oxford Hills sophomore Jim Bower gained 209 yards on the ground and ran for three scores in the Vikings’ 24-7 win over Waterville. A day earlier, Tony Walker rushed for 168 yards and Chris Kates intercepted three passes — all of which were turned into touchdowns — in Lisbon’s 29-20 win at Boothbay.

Lisbon held Fryeburg scoreless through three quarters while allowing only 14 yards total offense, but the Greyhounds needed overtime to beat the Raiders 20-14 on Oct. 10, 1992. Quarterback Shawn Daigle led Fryeburg’s fourth-quarter rally to tie the game at 14. In overtime, Neal Trottier tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Keith Doucette to put Lisbon ahead, and then Ryan Keys intercepted a pass to seal the victory. The day before, two fourth-quarter touchdowns gave Class C Jay a big win over Class B Mountain Valley, 20-6. The Falcons, playing without starting QB Jason Carrier, took a 6-0 lead into halftime. T.J. Plourde scored the Tigers’ first touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth, a 24-yard pass from Mark Fournier to Ryan Birmingham gave Jay the lead, and Plourde sealed it with a 43-yard TD run.

Verne Paradie kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired to give Edward Little a 17-14 win over Westbrook on Oct. 6, 1989. The Red Eddies’ offense got the ball back via punt on its own 33-yard line with 59 seconds left. Quarterback Josh Spooner completed a 20-yard pass to Dan Abromson and then a 33-yarder to Paradie with three seconds left, setting up Paradie’s heroic kick. Another exciting game happened that same day in York, where Matt Gaudet won a battle of standout QBs against York’s Matt Ronca. York rallied back from a 9-0 deficit to go up 13-9 in the fourth quarter. Mountain Valley’s Terry Stewart intercepted a pass at the York 39 with less than four minutes left. Gaudet gained 16 yards on a bootleg and then connected with Rick Rinaldo for the winning score on a 23-yard pass.

Randy Matthews’ 80-yard touchdown run gave Lisbon a 13-7 victory over Jay in a battle of previously unbeaten teams on Oct. 7, 1967. The Greyhounds scored first when Lucien Fournier picked up a blocked kick and returned it 75 yards for a TD. The Tigers evened the score in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by Alan Brisard. The ensuing kickoff gave Lisbon the ball at its own 20, setting up Matthews’ clutch scamper. Mexico defeated Wilton 20-0 that same day, paced by a 30-yard TD pass from Bill Bisson to Jeff Wyman, a 7-yard touchdown run by Bill Vienneau and a 6-yard plunge by Steve Bouthot. Also, Livermore Falls topped Gould 13-6. The Andies built a 13-0 lead on a 17-yard run by Dick Hastava and Gary Keene’s 29-yard scoring pass to Bob Hanson.
