AUBURN — Housing Resources for Youth, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting homeless students in the midcoast region, is expanding its services to Auburn.
With an alarming increase in the number of homeless teenagers in the area, the organization is seeking host families within the Auburn school system to provide a safe and nurturing environment for students in need, according to a news release from Liz Allen, director of communications and community engagement with the city.
The host home program is designed to offer homeless teens the support they require to thrive academically and personally. Host families play a pivotal role in this initiative, offering temporary accommodations, homework assistance, and ensuring students’ regular attendance at school. Students may stay with host families for varying durations, ranging from a few weeks to an entire school year or even longer, depending on their unique circumstances.
Antwane Mills, who assumed the role of program director for HRY Auburn in July, is at the forefront of this expansion. Based at Auburn’s Community Development Office, located at 95 Main St., Mills is dedicated to matching homeless students with prospective host families, and fostering stable and supportive environments.
This program was made possible through funding from the city’s HOME-ARP funds, which prioritize housing services for individuals and families at risk of homelessness. Sasha Anastasoff, the McKinney-Vento liaison for the Auburn school system, has advocated for this initiative by documenting the presence of 69 homeless students in Auburn, further highlighting the need for such services.
“We are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of homeless teenagers in Auburn,” said Mills. “It is impossible to envision a bright future without first understanding the role that our youth play in the creation of such. Give them safety, stability and resources, then stand back and witness the magic created.”
