DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Ladies of Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International is bringing back its annual Teddy Bear Holiday Fair at the Lewiston High School gym on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Ladies of Mu are educators, both active and retired, from the Lewiston-Auburn area. Money generated by our fair goes to scholarships, one for a graduating senior from one of the high schools in the Twin Cities and surrounding communities who plans a career in education, and the other goes to a Delta Kappa Gamma member who is working on an advanced degree.

The fair will be selling baked goods such as cookies, cakes, pies, bread, and an assortment of candies and pastries; used books and DVDs; white elephant items; harvest items such as jellies, jams, salsas and pickles; gently loved stuffed animals; crafts, including knitted scarves, hats, mittens, baby layettes, kitchen towels and dishcloths; holiday crafts, and decorations. We will also have a raffle table with handmade items, gift certificates for lobster and gas, a children’s craft basket, and many other treasures.

We hope many will come out to see us and support our efforts to raise scholarship money.

ANSWER: This sounds like an awesome fair with lots to choose from. Thanks to all you educators who work so hard to keep this going year after year.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’ve been pleased with my experiences with local supermarkets as well as our independent grocers because they always guarantee their meat and produce.

On a few occasions though, I’ve had issues with items that aren’t up to par and are not their responsibility. I usually just deal with it. However, a while ago, all in the same day, I purchased three products — crackers, bread and instant tea — that were unacceptable. I phoned the separate national 1-800 numbers on each package of these products and quickly received refund coupons totaling more than twice my original purchase, so it was well worth the effort. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Thanks for sharing that helpful tip! It reminds me of my mom, who never let any sub-par product get past her. She was the queen of calling when something wasn’t up to her expectations, and guess what — her time and effort always paid off!

So go for it, readers. Use a respectful tone in your call or correspondence, state the issue, send an accompanying photo if you feel it will help your case, and remember that most products guarantee “customer satisfaction.”

And if you really love a particular item, consider notifying the company and/or write a positive  review. If you have other stories to share on this topic, let’s hear them.
