On Oct. 3, the news website Daily Beast published an article titled “Trump Shares Surreal Courtroom Sketch of Him Sitting Next to Jesus” (referring to his recent fraud trial in New York).
The sketch was created by a fan who posted it on X, the website formerly known as Twitter. Donald Trump later posted it on his social media platform, grossly misnamed Truth Social.
In it, the two men look like a couple of grim-faced truthers in league against “the deep state.” The artist’s’ caption reads in part: “This is the most accurate court sketch of all time.”
Of all time, mind you — spoken like a Trumper. With the Donald, any exceptional situation, favorable to him or not, is uber-historic, precedent-shattering. “The continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time,” he’s dubbed the trial, paranoically, to give one example of his jumbo nothing burgers.
(Trump is about as well-versed in history as he is in molecular physics. Consider this doozy: In a speech he gave on July 4, 2019, he made laughable reference to 18th century airports.)
The author remarked that it’s unclear whether the defendant really believes Jesus is on his side in the trial. Frankly, I don’t believe he believes in Jesus, any more than I believe his favorite book is the Bible. What I believe is that he’s an irredeemable liar.
The image of Jesus is merely useful to him in gratifying his base and duping more Christians into believing he’s America’s divinely anointed fixer.
