JAY — The Select Board voted Monday to go with a Raymond contractor for a temporary bridge for Hutchinson Road that was washed out and heavily damaged during the June 29 rain storm which caused flooding.

Starrett Snow and Landscape Services of Raymond bid $96,732 for the bridge. Wyman & Simpson Inc. of Richmond bid $172,590 for a larger temporary bridge.

After assessing the site, it was determined that a 45-foot span temporary bridge is sufficient to properly cross the stream, according to Benjamin Starrett’s estimate to Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere.

With the help of Dirigo Bridge Co. of Madison, a concrete bridge company, they have designed concrete abutments constructed out of concrete blocks four rows high and 45-foot bridge frame with four 24-foot by 76-foot beams. The bridge will be decked with 12, 4-inch timber mats that are 16-foot wide.

The estimate includes the removal of the existing structure for temporary road access, install the new temporary bridge and removal of the temporary bridge when the permanent road is installed.

The bridge can support a fire truck, LaFreniere told the board.

ADM Welding & Fabrication of Warren, Pennsylvania, gave a quote for delivery of a temporary bridge and removal but not for installation of it. The cost for delivery of 50-foot hinge bridge was $5,310 and the same price to return it.

Jay had an estimated $7.9 million in damage to roads and sewer lines and to provide temporary access. There is a federal disaster declaration in place for Franklin County for the June storm that will assist Jay with the costs.
