Christmas tree shippers in this city were notified today that the Michigan department of agriculture had placed a quarantine on the importation of evergreen trees from any part of New England effective Oct 31, because of the danger of a spread of the gypsy and brown tall moths. Several other States have taken similar action.

50 Years Ago: 1973

President Nixon, preoccupied with developments in the Middle a East, today postponed until Friday a broadcast news conference that was expected to dwell on the Watergate tapes controversy.

Deputy Press Secretary Gerald L. Warren said Nixon was concentrating so thoroughly on the Middle East crisis that he decided to postpone the session scheduled for 9 p.m. EDT. No time was set for the Friday news conference.

Nixon had been certain to face questioning about the possible appointment of a new special prosecutor to succeed the ousted Archibald Cox, particularly in view of his reversal of a weekend stand against surrendering White House tapes to  U.S. District Judge John J. Siarica.

25 Years Ago: 1998

Everyone’s Source Depot in Farmington will hold Halloween mask making workshops from 3 to 5pm., Wednesday. October 28 through Friday, October 30. The Depot is in the former Methodist Church on the Farmington campus. During October the Depot features lots of materials and ideas for making costumes and masks and Halloween decorations.
