REGION — On the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 25, two shootings took the lives of 18 people and injured 13 more in Lewiston at Just-In-Time Recreation and Schemengees Bar & Grille. In the aftermath, a manhunt began to find the active shooter, and several events slated to take place during the weekend were canceled, with some managing to reschedule their Halloween activities in the wake of this tragedy.
Robert Card, 40, of Bowdoin opened fire at Just-In-Time Recreation and Schemengees Bar & Grille and fled the scene before first responders could apprehend him. Card was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday evening, ending the manhunt.
Many organizations in the Franklin County area that were planning on holding Halloween events during that weekend were forced to cancel. Some managed to salvage their Halloween festivities by rescheduling to this weekend.
In Jay, the Halloween dinner/dance scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27 at the Jay VFW post was canceled. The Trunk-or-Treat scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, was rescheduled to Sunday, Nov. 5, from 1 to 4 p.m.
In Livermore, the Trunk-or-Treat scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, at Wayside Bible Baptist Church has been postponed to Saturday, Nov. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.
In Wilton, Allied Realty’s Fall Festival that was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, was canceled. Ambition Brewery also called off the costume contest and remained closed on Friday, Oct. 27, while the whereabouts of the shooter was still unknown. No plans to reschedule either event have been announced.
Currently, Wilton plans to continue hosting the Trunk-or-Treat at Kineowatha Park on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Other events, such as the Halloween bash hosted by the Western Maine Play Museum, continued as schedule with no interruption.
In Farmington, the Farmington Community Center’s Indoor Spooktacular, originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, was rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m. Space is still available for parents that want to register their children for the event, according to the Facebook page.
Farmington Rotary Club canceled the Window Painting contest scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27. The Trunk-or-Treat, originally scheduled for the same day, has been rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the High Street parking lot at the University of Maine at Farmington.
