SOUTH PARIS — Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering a Butterfly and Hummingbird Seed Mix — designed specifically to attract nectar loving pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other native pollinators — as its fall fundraiser.
This mix will reach three to four feet in height and includes more than 30 species.
Fall is a good time to plant wildflower seeds; in fact, many seeds will germinate better after exposure to the cold and snow, according to a news release from Chantelle Hay with the district.
Fall sowing is a low maintenance way to add color and interest to one’s landscape, as well as support pollinators and birds. Unlike planting in spring, fall planting does not require intensive watering or fuss. Seeds will happily overwinter and pop up in spring or summer next year.
Some of the benefits of sowing a wildflower garden or meadow include:
• A colorful garden that doesn’t require much care once it’s established;
• No kneeling, bending, and digging holes to plant;
• Attracting beneficial insects, pollinators, birds and other wildlife;
• Filling in gaps in existing lawn or meadow to add color and pollinator food; and
• Replacing areas of a lawn to reduce the need to mow.
It is the district’s last fundraiser of the year. All proceeds support its education and outreach programs in Oxford County.
All orders must be received by Thursday, Nov. 9.
The Seed Order Form is available to download online at oxfordcountyswcd.org or by contacting the district at oxfordcountyswcd@gmail.com or 207-744-3119.
