We didn’t think it could happen in Maine and then it did, forcing Mainers to reexamine our convictions on gun safety.
No one has done so more bravely than Rep. Jared Golden in his response to the mass shooting in his hometown. His stated commitment to work for an assault weapons ban after his previous opposition sets a new standard for political courage and accountability that has not gone unnoticed.
Indeed, two of his challengers for reelection have reacted with the tired refrains that signal no action, no accountabilty, no attempt at solving the deadly problem of unfettered access to firearms that serve no civilian purpose.
Voters of the 2nd District, we have a choice between courage and waffling. Golden has taken the high road. He deserves our support and our votes next November.
