AUBURN – Charles Sewell Marshall Jr., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at Clover Manor in Auburn. Born in Auburn on June 6, 1928, to parents Charles S. Marshall Sr. and Mary Lillian Hinckley Marshall. He was a graduate of Edward Little High School.
Raised in a Christian home, Charles accepted Jesus at age-5, the same year he began piano lessons. His musical career began at age 12 playing for prayer meetings at local churches. While attending high school, he was accompanist for the ELHS Glee Club and Chorus. During his teen years he was honored to play the Kotzschmar organ at Portland City Hall.
His first public organ performance was at West Auburn Congregational church in 1945 accompanying the Glee Club. The following September he was hired by the church as full time organist at age 17, a position he held for 75 years, for which he was honored at the Maine State House of Representatives with “Charles Marshall Day”. He was also organist at Mechanic Falls Advent Christian Camp Meeting for 60 years and 30 years at United Methodist Church in Lewiston. He has played at most Auburn/Lewiston Churches for numerous events as well as camp meetings and churches throughout New England.
He was predeceased by June, his wife of 64 years, his sister Edith Demerest, and brother Robert Marshall.
He is survived by his son, Bruce E. Marshall, his wife, Sharon, whom Charles loved as a daughter, of Lyman, daughter Bren M. Norwood and husband Dan of Ellsworth; Five grandchildren, Clinton Marshall, his wife Susie and their four children, Colby, MacKenzie, Shaylee, and Aili of Cumberland R.I., Dr Elisabeth Marshall Kallembach, her husband, James and their son Otto of Crete IL., Kathryne Kennedy and her children, Lorcan and Maeve of Lyman, Vaughn Hitchcock and wife Makayla of Ellsworth, Zeke Hitchcock and his girlfriend Jackie Winn and their son Seamus of Ellsworth, and his loving companion of five years, Alda Reynolds of Auburn.
A celebration of Life will be held November 19, at the West Auburn Congregational Church, 811 West Auburn Road. Auburn, ME 04210, at 2 p.m., Reception to follow.
