Early Thursday afternoon, the day after the horrific and senseless murders in Lewiston, I wrote a note to family members and close friends, telling them the sad news and assuring them my spouse and I were fine.

I included in my letter the following: “I particularly hope that this tragedy will cause our congressman, Jared Golden, to rethink his position on the use of weapons of mass destruction.”

Within two hours my hope became reality.  The congressman, at a news conference, said: “I now call on the United States Congress to ban assault rifles like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing.”

From the bottom of my heart I say to him, thank you sir.
