ALBANY, N.Y. — Top-seeded Central Maine Community College seized control in the second half to down fifth-seeded Paul Smith’s College 4-1 in a Yankee Small College Conference men’s soccer semifinal Saturday.
The Mustangs (12-2-1) had 18 shots on goal, scoring with three assisted goals and one unassisted. The game started with a corner kick 51 seconds in by Lewiston grad Igor Domingues, with a header by fellow former Blue Devil Moses Lumu, but it was saved by Bobcats (4-8-3) goalie Cazmir Couble (14 saves).
CMCC’s first goal was scored by Domingues, assisted by brother Ivan Domingues at 11:56 in the game after five consecutive saves by Couble and four corner kicks by the Mustangs.
The second Mustangs goal was not until 9:33 into the second half, scored by Lumu and assisted by Igor Domingues on a corner kick.
At 66:41 in the match, Ivan Domingues was back to score the third goal, assisted by Lumu.
Mustangs goalie Arnaud Nyagasaza (seven saves for the game) saved three Bobcat shots on goal before Adam Holt scored an unassisted goal, putting Paul Smith’s College on the board at 81:45 in the game.
Sam Boynton scored the Mustangs’ fourth goal on a corner kick, unassisted, at 88:14 in the game, securing the Mustangs’ spot in the YSCC championship game Sunday against rival Southern Maine Community College.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
CMCC 2, NHTI 1: Central Maine Community College secured Yankee Small College Conference semifinal win in Auburn to earn its second conference finals appearance in program history.
Sophomore forward Natalie Tracy scored both goals for the Mustangs (10-4-1, 7-1 YSCC), adding to her record-breaking season with 17 goals.
The Mustangs advance to the YSCC finals, which are Sunday at noon at CMCC. They will play Albany College of Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences (8-1-2, 5-1-2), which defeated Paul Smith’s College 2-1 in the other semifinal Saturday.
FIELD HOCKEY
WILLIAMS 2, BATES 1: The fourth-seeded Ephs (11-6) rallied in the final nine minutes to knock off the third-seeded Bobcats (12-5) in a NESCAC semifinal in Middlebury, Vermont.
Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg gave Bates the lead just before the 20-minute mark of the game, and that 1-0 lead held into the fourth quarter. Molly Hellman tied the game off an assist from Anna Miller with 8:38 left in the game, and Pilar Torres fed Kiki Higgins for the game-winning off a penalty corner with no time remaining.
Kalli Jacobsen made six saves for the Bobcats, while Gates Tenerowicz stopped two of Bates’ three shots on goal.
FOOTBALL
TRINITY 52, BATES 7: The Bobcats (0-7) fell well behind before getting on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter of a NESCAC loss to the Bantams (6-1) in Hartford, Connecticut.
Bates broke the shutout with 2:05 remaining when quarterback Liam Foley completed a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nolan Hobbs.
Trinity put points on the board across all four quarters, starting with a Matthew Jumes 27-yard field goal. Running back Tyler DiNapoli scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, one off an 11-yard catch and one on a 3-yard run. In the second quarter, wide receivers Patrick McCaffrey and Sean Clapp each scored a touchdown on passes from Spencer Fetter.
In the third quarter, wide receiver Max Roche scored a touchdown off a 1-yard pass from Fetter, and in the fourth quarter running back William Kirby scored on a 3-yard run and wide receiver Ian Coffey scored on a 41-yard pass from Nicholas Bailey.
The Bobcats will face Hamilton at home next Saturday for senior day.
