A memorable season for the Central Maine Community College women’s volleyball team ended Friday with a second straight loss in pool play at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division 2 national championship tournament.

The Mustangs lost in straight sets to Kent State-Tuscarawas, 25-18, 25-12, 25-10, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, on Friday to fall to 0-2 in Pool A.

Fifth-seeded CMCC also dropped a straight-sets match to top-seeded Penn State-Mont Alto on Thursday.

Against the fourth-seeded Golden Eagles on Friday, Tiara Begishe led the Mustangs with 13 digs and Isabella Leatherman added 11. Angelina Leonard, who was named a USCAA second-team All-American this week, paced CMCC with 14 assists, to go along with three digs and one kill.

Kenzie Bills had a team-high six kills, while Lewiston grad Sage Cormier recorded two.

In Thursday’s 3-0 loss to the Lions (25-8, 25-8, 25-23), Leonard recorded 13 assists, while Leatherman and Gia Cooper each delivered 10 digs. Cormier had one kill and one dig.

In addition to Leonard’s All-American honor, CMCC head coach Kyle Chapman was named the USCAA National Coach of the Year.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
VSU-CASTLETON 59, UMF 42: Ruby McMinis scored a team-high eight points for the Beavers (0-2), who couldn’t dig out of a first-quarter hole against the host Spartans (1-0) on the opening night of Spartan Classic tournament in Castleton, Vermont.

University of Maine at Farmington spread the scoring around, with Jaycie Stevens and Grace Dwyer each contributing seven points and Sarah Poli and Melissa Mayo adding six apiece.

Vermont State University-Castleton jumped out to 25-6 lead after one quarter, then was outscored by UMaine-Farmington 36-34 the rest of the way. Elise Magro led all scorers with 21 points, and Liz Bailey pitched in with 13 for the Spartans.

UMaine-Farmington will face New England College — which lost to St. Joseph’s College in Castleton on Friday night — in Saturday’s action at the Spartan Classic.

CMCC 81, BERKELEY 65: Ella Lavigne went off for a game-high 31 points as the Mustangs (5-0) raced ahead of the Knights (1-2) in a HVIAC/YSCC Challenge matchup in Auburn.

Edward Little grad Chantel Ouellette compiled nine points, five assists and three rebounds for Central Maine CC, which held end-of-quarter leads of 27-12, 45-22 and 71-56, and Oxford Hills grad Molly Corbett had eight points.

Keisy Villanueva led Berkeley with 20 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
CMCC 111, WORD OF LIFE 85: Leavitt grad Wyatt Hathaway led all scorers with 25 points as the Mustangs (1-1) won on the road against the Huskies (0-4) in Pottersville, New York.

Boston Caldwell was right behind Hathaway with 21 points for Central Maine Community College, which jumped out to a 66-36 halftime lead. Jackson Birmingham added 17 and Cam Pollock 12.

Quentin Lackey paced Word of Life with 18 points.
