Seth Ferguson was the overtime hero for the Utica Jr. Comets against the Twin City Thunder on Friday night.
The second-year forward scored less than a minute into the extra frame for a 3-2 victory over the Thunder in a USPHL NCDC game at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.
Robert Gatewood scored twice in the victory.
Aiden Bender gave the Thunder (5-6-2, 12 points) a 1-0 advantage a little over seven minutes into the first period. Cole Roenick, the nephew of former NHLer Jeremy Roenick, had the assist.
Gatewood put the puck past Thunder goalie Stefan Carney (34 saves) eight minutes into the second period to tie the game 1-1.
Gatewood found the back of the net again midway through the third period, giving the Comets (9-5-2, 20 points) a 2-1 lead.
Nolan Leonard evened the game 14 minutes into the third period when the puck got behind Utica goalie Cameron Manley (22 saves). James Tatro had the helper on the tying goal.
Overtime lasted just 33 seconds before Ferguson earned the extra point for the visitors.
The teams play again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday at Norway Savings Bank Arena.
