I am responding to the Nov. 7 article about the mother who was responsible for her 14-month-old son dying from a fentanyl overdose. I am outraged that this woman only has to serve four years.

I was arrested with 1.7 grams of cocaine base and had to serve five years in Maine State Prison. This woman, who allowed her child to literally get covered in fentanyl, will probably be on work release in a year then released on home confinement after serving only half her sentence.

The system is broken.

When a woman who exposes her baby to fentanyl — and the child dies with four times the amount needed to kill an adult — gets less jail time than a man arrested with a usable amount of crack, something is seriously wrong in my opinion.

I have suffered from addiction for 30 years, and in the 20 years I have been a father I never exposed my child to the danger of accidental consumption.

There is no excuse.

Taxpayers need to know how the Maine justice system is really at work.

I served five years for a nonviolent, victimless crime at their expense while this woman — who killed her baby — might go home in three years or less.

My baby was at home missing her dad, which I admit was my fault, but the math just doesn’t add up.
