50 Years Ago: 1973
Making Lewiston-Auburn winter months more bearable, employees of the Maine Department of Transportation began their annual task of installing wooden windbreakers on the windy side of North Bridge between Lewiston and Auburn. If the energy crisis and fuel rationing turn out to be what it is cranked up to be, there will be more pedestrians than usual this winter on North Bridge across the Androscoggin. A lot of people will be grateful the windbreakers are there.
25 Years Ago: 1998
The winter night patrol of the Maine Department of Transportation has begun its annual task of keeping a winter watch on Maine’s highways. The patrols which are beginning their 49th season cover the 3,400 miles of highway, plowed by the state, including 240 miles of interstate highway, alerting plowing and sanding crews when a storm moves into their patrol area.
