HARTFORD — Over a dozen fire departments responded Monday afternoon to a fire on Davenport Road near Mountain View Drive which likely claimed around 18 acres of woods, officials said.
Buckfield Fire crews were dispatched at 1:42 p.m. to 115 Davenport Road and were met by a landowner who did not want to allow crews access to the scene, Buckfield Firefighter/EMT Tucker Tardif and Turner Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Merry said.
Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies were able to detain the homeowner and secure the scene in 10 to 15 minutes, allowing fire crews access to the blaze, Tardif said.
Merry said upon reaching the scene and assessing the blaze, crews called out for more manpower and trucks. No one was injured fighting the fire, they said.
Merry said he ran staging about a quarter mile from the scene keeping his and other departments ready to back up crews fighting the flames. Operations were shut down around 5:20 p.m. for safety, they said.
Tardif said the fire is still under investigation and crews would return Tuesday morning to continue cleanup and to meet with Maine Forest Service.
Oxford County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to questions about the identity of the homeowner and whether the person was arrested and charged.
Assisting Buckfield and Turner fire crews were Maine Forest Service, Canton, Dixfield, Jay, Livermore, Mexico, Norway, Paris, Peru, Rumford, Sumner, West Paris and Woodstock.
