LEWISTON – Jane Alice Hamel, 96, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Jane came into this world in June of the year 1927, a daughter to Arthur and Maize (Deschamps) Ouellette. She was born and raised in the Lewiston/Auburn community and spent many years of her youth helping out on the family farm. She attended Lewiston schools, graduating from Edward Little High School.
She met the love of her life, Roland Hamel, and the two were married on Aug. 9, 1947, at the St. Louis Church in Auburn. They were married for 73 years prior to Roland’s passing in 2020.
Jane was a homemaker for many years early in their marriage. At the same time, she also tended to the family store in New Auburn until the time of her parents death. Once her children started school, she worked for many years in the cafeteria for the Auburn School Department. She spent the last years of employment working at Bonneau’s Supermarket in Lewiston up until the store closure.
When she wasn’t working or caring for her family, Jane loved cooking, crocheting, gardening and doing soduku. She and Roland were communicants of Sacred Heart Church in Auburn for decades. After retirement, they frequently attended church on weekdays as well.
Up until the time of her death, she enjoyed following the political events of the day. Her “reporting” was so accurate, that close family members just had to check in with her and she could succinctly repeat the news of the day – and God forbid, should you try to interrupt her daily watching of “the View”.
Jane is predeceased by her parents, her loving husband Roland, her brother Ernest Ouellette and her sister Rita Dube.
She leaves behind her son Donald of Lewiston, her daughter Diane and husband Robert Cormier of Casco, her grandson Dr. Craig Fournier and wife Dr. Jessie Fournier of Delmar, N.Y. She also leaves behind her three great-grandchildren, Andie, Ivy and CJ (Craig Junior) Fournier of Delmar, N.Y. Lastly, she leaves behind her sister-in-law Connie (Noella) Campenelli of Shelton, Conn. Jane was also blessed with many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 26, from 3-7 p.m., at The Fortin Group Funeral Home in Auburn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 27, at 11 a.m., at Holy Family Church, followed by Committal Prayers in the Large Chapel at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Alison, June, Sayla and Brie for their kind and compassionate care given to Jane at her home in the last months of her life.
Arrangements are under the care of The Fortin Group Funeral Home, 217 Turner Street Auburn, ME 04210, (207) 783-8545
