The Northern Cyclones got revenge against the Twin City Thunder from Friday’s overtime thriller.
Logan Abric earned the shutout Saturday by stopping 44 shots in the Cyclones’ 2-0 win over the Thunder in a USPHL NCDC New England Division game at Cyclones Arena in Hudson, New Hampshire.
“I thought we carried the play, we had great opportunities, but give the Abric kid a lot of credit, he made a lot of saves,” Thunder coach Dan Hodge said. “We missed the net a lot, not to take anything away from them, but we had some breakaways, 2-on-1s, odd-man rushes where we shot the puck wide.”
Both goals came on the power play, with the Cyclones going 2 for 4 on the man-advantage. The Thunder didn’t have any power plays.
Hodge said the Thunder (6-11-2, 14 points) took undisciplined penalties throughout the game, which were costly.
After a scoreless first period, Charlie Zetterqvist scored his sixth goal of the season nearly seven minutes into the middle frame.
Ian Duffy, who the Cyclones (7-11-4, 18 points) recently acquired from the Rockets Hockey Club and was at Maine Nordiques’ main and training camps, scored his fourth tally of the season 23 seconds into the third period for the insurance goal.
“We gave him time and space on the power play,” Hodge said. “He shot it across and it actually went off one of our defenseman’s skate into the net. So, it was a tough one to start the period off, but again, we didn’t execute.”
Michael Markowski had two assists, while Keenan Schneider and Charlie Ross each added a helper.
Thunder goalie Stefan Carney was also outstanding, making 40 saves in the loss.
“Carney played really well again,” Hodge said. “I told our guys at the end of the game, ‘You have some of the best goalies in the league in practice every day. You score goals on them — it should translate to games.'”
The Thunder are back in action at Norway Savings Bank Arena next Friday and Saturday when they host the Junior Bruins at 7:30 p.m. each night.
