The first step towards making Monticello a national shrine has been taken by the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation with the payment of $100,000 towards the purchase of the home. Hereafter the board of directors announced it will have a direct part in the care and supervision of the property pending payment of the remaining $400,000 of the purchase price. The first payment represents a contributions from New York state.
50 Years Ago: 1973
The White House will formally disclose this week that President Nixon paid less than $6,000 in federal income taxes during the past three years.
Confidential documents now under preparation also list Nixon as paying more than$72,000 in federal income tax in his first year of his presidency — before he obtained a substantial tax donation of his vice presidential papers to the government.
25 Years Ago: 1998
Housing and Urban Renewal Secretary Andrew Coumo, who has been criticized by Maine congressional delegates for failing to deliver promised ice storm recovery aid, pledged Tuesday to help look for additional funding for New England states affected by the January ice storm disaster, U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe said.
Coumo called Snowe Tuesday and agreed to take another look at possible funding options for Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New England. Snowe said the call came after she phoned Vice President Gore seeking more substantial federal support for the region’s unmet utilities infrastructure costs that resulted from the storm.
