On Dec. 16, Boba in Lewiston closed its doors for good.
J. Dostie Jewelers will be relocating to Yarmouth after 76 years anchoring the corner of Main and Lisbon streets.
Unfortunately, this is a disturbing trend that is plaguing the downtown area.
That is only part of the problem. Lewiston has one hospital on the edge, and pharmacies in disarray. The real issue is leadership at City Hall, or a lack thereof.
For years, our city leaders have lacked a vision and a spine to build a thriving community. Meanwhile, drugs, crime and homelessness wreak havoc and no one knows what to do.
It’s the same episode that is being replayed in many cities around the country. Who’s going to save us when our tax base is depleted to pay for the increasing programs and services our politicians love to dole out?
I love this city. I grew up here, attended the local schools, and worked in various businesses. My parents owned a convenience store for 18 years on Blake Street. I try to make it a point to support the local businesses because they are the lifeblood of any community.
Boba not only provided excellent food, but Zach Pratt and Keshia Thanephonesy, just like J. Dostie Jewelers, gave back to the community manyfold. We should be relishing their spirit and holding them as examples of how to provide a business that serves its customers and community.
We need leaders who represent all citizens of Lewiston, not just some.
