The board also authorized spending $50,000 from The Stone Trust for new bookcases for the A.B. Ricker Library.
In other business, selectpersons agreed to move $15,977 in charitable requests, as presented, forward to the budget committee to consider incorporating in next year’s budget. Those requests are: Community Concepts, $3,500; LifeFlight of Maine, $1,477; Maine Preservation, $1,000; Range Pond Association, $5,000; American Red Cross, $1,000; Thompson Lake Environmental Association, $2,500; and SeniorsPlus, $1,500.
The Select Board also gave its support to Matt Steinbeck, Poland Regional High School physical education teacher, to apply for a Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative grant of $50,000 to build a trail system behind the high school on town land.
The trail will require up to 200 feet of platforms to cross over some wetlands and a stream.
The trail would lead to an open area of high ground that could be developed as an outdoor classroom.
Recreation Director Scott Segal will collaborate with Steinbeck on writing the grant.
The town’s Conservation Committee approved of the trail with the condition that mountain bikes are not permitted on it.
