To the Editor:

It has been interesting to see the responses and reactions of people in the aftermath of the flood. Social media posts show controversy around prioritizing Sunday River over individuals in the community. Obviously, many depend on our Ski areas. However, do they really deserve priority over valuable and long-standing members of our community?

There is no doubt Sunday River was focused on their profits; many rely on their hours and income from there. However, the question also arises do they contribute to the community or are they only taking from it? They rely on every business to support them; and hope that businesses profit enough that Sunday River doesn’t actually have to contribute to help people. Do they donate or offer to help house the people in our community who are displaced by the floods? A reasonable question asked by some. So many people in the community give without recognition and frequently. Some are seeing that those with the least to give are giving; while a big corporation with big profits is not contributing and this ruffles some feathers.

Both sides make good points to be considered. What if (God Forbid) natural forces or something else made it unprofitable for Sunday River, Gould, or others to be here. Would they bail out? What would happen to the businesses that rely on them? It seems important to find a balance between what brings profit and focusing on those who support our businesses and community outside of these bigger companies.

It is important to not be too reliant on companies that are often not concerned about other businesses and the communities they are in. It is important to appreciate the benefits we can gain from them; but also, important to not let them overshadow or lead us to overlook those who are a part of our community and who feed and nourish our community with or without the presence of bigger corporations.
