AUBURN — Two people were being examined for injuries early Friday night after the SUV they were riding in flipped onto its side on Court Street.
Police said it appeared the vehicle experienced mechanical failure while being driven up the hill.
Police, fire and rescue crews were called to the area of Court and Lake streets about 5:30 p.m. for a report that the vehicle had overturned in traffic on Goff Hill.
“The vehicle rolled back and struck a second vehicle before continuing across the street and rolling onto its hood where it finally came to rest upon a fire hydrant,” said Auburn Police Lt. Justin Richardson, who was investigating the wreck. “The vehicle that rolled over also grazed a pedestrian, but the pedestrian wasn’t injured.”
Both people in the overturned car had to be extricated by fire crews. There did not appear to be serious injuries, though both were taken to a Lewiston hospital for evaluation.
Their names were not released.
The driver had been headed up the hill but the SUV ultimately came to rest on its passenger side in the lane headed down the hill, witnesses said.
The crash during the Friday commuter hour initially snarled traffic in the area, but witnesses said that by 5:45 p.m., police had traffic moving along normally again.
