DEAR SUN SPOTS: I want to ask if anyone remembers Wasson Grove on Route 4 in New Gloucester, popular in the 1940s and beyond. Their hamburgers were something many people enjoyed for many years until the turnpike was built. I hope all who remember this place will write to Sun Spots. — John, Augusta
ANSWER: I hope our readers will help you reminisce! If anyone remembers Wasson Grove, please write in!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The New Gloucester AMVETS Auxiliary is planning an outdoor yard sale at 1095 Lewiston Road on July 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are renting tables for $20 each. Money earned will go toward the upkeep and maintenance of the AMVETS Hall. Contact Bea at 926-4489 and Joyce at 926-4693.
ANSWER: Excellent! I hope it’s a great success.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am looking for a vintage porch glider in good condition. When we were growing up we had one that was like an upholstered sofa with springs and metal bars underneath that enabled it to glide back and forth. It was wonderful for afternoon naps! I would love to have one now but have been unable to find anything, of new design or vintage, that even comes close.
If any readers have one they would like to sell for a reasonable price or know where I could get one, please contact me at 504-0545. — Lee, no town
ANSWER: That does sound comfy! When I was little girl, a friend of my mother’s had a sofa such as this on her screened porch. I also remember that these gliders with their metal underpinnings had a tendency to get rusty over time.
Calling all antique and vintage furniture dealers! Do you know where we might find such an animal? Or perhaps someone knows of a company that makes a good replica of this porch-sitting staple from bygone days. Please write in!
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I had a recipe for Cabbage Rolls that I cut out of your paper a few years ago and taped to a recipe card, and now I’ve misplaced it. The recipe was easy, but a little unusual because it had cinnamon in it. — Doris, Lewiston
ANSWER: I think this is what you are looking for — this recipe, including cinnamon and other spices, appeared in the Sun Journal in a bigger feature story about radio personality Roselle Coury, who was of Lebanese descent, on Oct. 28, 2018. Enjoy!
Roselle’s Cabbage Rolls: Separate the leaves from 1 head of cabbage and parboil for a few minutes in a pot of boiling water. Allow to cool. Combine 3/4 pound of ground beef, 1 cup rice, 1 teaspoon each salt, allspice, and cinnamon, 1 tablespoon dried mint, and 1 tablespoon butter in a large bowl. Tightly wrap 1-2 tablespoons of this mixture into each cabbage leaf to form rolls. Place in a large saucepan or a Dutch oven, using any extra cabbage to line the bottom of the pan. Pack the rolls in the pan tightly. Spoon 1 small can of tomato paste over the cabbage rolls then add enough water with another pinch of the spices to cover them all. Bring to a boil then simmer for 45 minutes. This recipe makes 4-6 servings.
