SANFORD — Lewiston battled from a three-touchdown deficit but its comeback bid fell short in a 27-24 Class A football loss to Sanford on Friday.
Jake Beninati rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Logan Ricker as the Spartans (3-2) built a 21-0 halftime lead over the Blue Devils (1-4) at Sanford.
In the third quarter, Lewiston quarterback Donovan Jackson, who ran for more than 100 yards, threw touchdown passes to Ethan Campbell and Eli Bigelow to cut the Spartans’ lead to 21-12.
Jordan Bissonette’s 4-yard TD run put Sanford up 27-12 in the fourth quarter, but Campbell and Bigelow each caught another touchdown pass to get the Blue Devils to within three points, 27-24.
FIELD HOCKEY
WINTHROP 7, OAK HILL 0: Bella Littler turned in a hat trick and Maddie Perkins scored once and collected three assists in the Ramblers’ shutout win over the Oak Hill (2-6) in Wales.
Lauryn Wood, who had two assists, Madeline Wagner and Izzy Folsom each scored a goal for Winthrop, which improves to 10-0.
MOUNTAIN VALLEY 3, HALL-DALE 2: Autumn Freeman had a hand in all the scoring with two goals and an assist to pace the Falcons to an MVC win in Farmingdale.
Taylor Duguay added the other goal for Mountain Valley (7-1-1) while Brooke Brown made three saves.
Lexi Chartier had both goals for the Bulldogs (1-3-1) and both were assisted by Averi Baker. Kelsey Cormier stopped five shots.
YORK 7, POLAND 0: Sage Works and Abby Dickenson each scored a pair of goals in the Wildcats win over the Knights in Poland.
Gail Armlin scored a goal and earned an assist, and Ashley LaPierre and Marge Hanlon each scored a goal for York.
Poland goalie Emma Moureau each made nine saves for the Knights.
DIRIGO 3, LISBON 2: Kathryn Colloder Emily woods, Jayce Brophy each scored a goal in the Cougars’ win over the Greyhound in Lisbon.
Grace Reril had two assists and Colloder had one. Haley Tuplin and Amelia Mooney each punched in a goal for the Greyhounds, Tuplin also picking up an assist.
Alvia Ellis made four saves Dirigo, while Maria Levesque had 12 saves for Lisbon.
LAKE REGION 5, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 1: Emily Reardon and Kasey Johnson notched two goals apiece, and the Lakers (4-4) erupted for four goals in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Patriots (2-7) at Naples.
Sadie Terrell also scored Lake Region.
Gray-New Gloucester got a fourth-quarter goal from Cady Kluck.
GIRLS SOCCER
SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 4, DIRIGO 1: Grace Espeaignette scored a goal in each half, directing the Phoenix to a win over the Cougars in Dixfield.
Leah Gilbert and Tateum Leclerc each scored a goal for Spruce Mountain. Dirigo’s Abby Thibodeau got her goal in the first half.
Emma Towers and Tyoaka Hodgkin combined to make four saves for the Phoenix, who outshot the Cougars 16-4.
MONMOUTH/WINTHROP 0, BUCKFIELD 0, TIE: Both the Mustangs’ goalie June Foyt and the Bucks’ goalie Ruby Cyr each made seven saves in the scoreless draw in Buckfield.
Monmouth/Winthrop (6-1-1) took 12 shots, while Buckfield (5-3-1) had nine. Monmouth/Winthrop had three corner kicks and Buckfield had one.
BOYS SOCCER
EDWARD LITTLE 3, MESSALONSKEE 1: Mohamed Adow slipped in a pair of goals and Campbell Cassidy in the Red Eddies’ win over the Eagles in Auburn.
With EL leading 2-1, Messalonskee got a penalty kick with three minutes left in the game. EL goalie Eli St. Laurent made a huge save to preserve the win. On the following possession, Adow scored to give EL some breathing room and make it 3-1.
Wesley Clements helped out EL with his two assists and Ben Cole had one. St. Laurent made four saves and the Red Eddies outshot Messalonskee 11-7.
Griffin Anderson scored for Messalonskee.
TELSTAR 2, CARRABEC 1: Hailey Smith had a goal and an assist on Morgan Zetts’ goal to lead the Rebels to over victory over the Cobras in North Anson.
Katie Evans made 14 saves for Telstar (1-3-0).
Aislinn Slate scored for Carrabec (1-2-0) while Trinity Slate made 18 saves.
LEWISTON 4, MT. ARARAT 0: Igor Domingues scored a goal and had a assist in the Blue Devils (8-0) win over the Eagles (5-3) in Lewiston.
Romano Bassa, Shafi Ibrahim, and Hamze Nur also scored for Lewiston.
Tanner Anctil made four saves in the win and Jack Fullerton stopped five shots for Mt. Ararat.
